Zambian Citizenship by Descent: Pathways and Pitfalls
The Citizenship of Zambia Act sets out several routes to Zambian citizenship, by birth, by descent, by registration and by adoption. For diaspora applicants, the descent route is often the most relevant but also the most procedurally demanding.
Eligibility
A person born outside Zambia is a citizen by descent if at the date of their birth either parent was a citizen of Zambia. Documenting the parent's citizenship, particularly for older applicants whose parents may have held now-defunct documentation, is the central practical challenge.
Dual citizenship
Zambia recognises dual citizenship under the current Constitution, removing what was historically a barrier for many applicants. Existing foreign citizenship need not be renounced.
Documentation
Birth certificates, parental identity documents, marriage certificates where surnames have changed, and supporting affidavits are typically required.
